ADE 630 Media and Materials: From Studio to Classroom
Course Desription
Through a consideration of the themes, practices and concerns of contemporary art, pre-service teachers will learn how to adapt and translate these ideas into educational experiences with children and adolescents. Themes such as the fragmented body, practices such as appropriation and concerns such as site/situation are the motivation for exploring the processes, properties and expressive uses of a range of materials, particularly with found and recycled materials. This course develops the kind of thinking that is not imitative of the themes, practices and concerns in contemporary art but rather supports the idea of adaptation, translation and the production of new meaning. Students will work with a range of materials and look at ways of structuring and motivating groups of children and adolescents in those materials. It will be a hands-on class in the studio. Students will be simultaneously encouraged to hone their personal artistic practice as thy explore new media and materials and will develop 3 gallery ready works of art as well as fully developed art educational experiences (lesson plans) for an age group of their choice. Discussions highlighting the correlation between artistic practice, theory and pedagogical experiences will be a recurring focus throughout the course.
Students will also use activities and discussions throughout the course to respond both collectively and individually to a physical site near the Pratt campus. The aim is to use this site as a productive space for experimenting with various media and material transformations. Students will be challenged to use this context as a theme or inspiration for a body of work that will be included in a collaborative exhibition at the end of the course.
